St John’s Students Compete at the 18th Malaysian Games (SUKMA)
Sukan Malaysia (SUKMA) or also known as the Malaysian Games is one of the largest sporting events held in Malaysia. Recently two students from St John’s, Sara and Uma had the pleasure of competing at the Games in Tennis.
The 2016 SUKMA Games draws together an estimated total of 5670 athletes from 13 States, Federal Territory and Brunei. During the competition a total of 24 sports are offered. The age group for SUKMA athletes are 21 years and below and are usually selected from an extremely competitive pool of strong elite athletes. SUKMA is often viewed as the high end national level sporting event and is usually referred to as the Malaysian version of the Olympics. The 18th Malaysia Games (SUKMA) 2016 was held mainly in Kuching, Sarawak from the 23 to 31 July 2016 and attracted an audience of 50,000 people.
We warmly congratulate both Uma and Sara who represented Terengganu in Tennis at the Games
Their results are as follows:
- Girls Tennis (four players) – Silver medal
- Girls Tennis Doubles (Uma and Sara) – Gold medal
- Girls Singles (Sara) – Silver medal
Currently in the world ranking for tennis Uma sits at 465 and Sara sits at 658. We are extremely proud of both students and wish them all the best for future competitions.
