Student Leadership

Developing Student Leaders is a core component of our educational philosophy at St John’s Anglican College. We believe that If students can practice leadership during their time at school, then they have the successful leadership foundations to transition as respectful, responsible and community-focused individuals when they graduate. It’s a life skill that enables students to be well-rounded and is something they can apply to a variety of situations at home, work, sport and more.

At St John’s we see leadership as serving our community. It’s a concept we call Servant Leadership and to this end our student leaders attend to meeting the needs of our student body, staff, parents and wider College stakeholders.

The Student Leadership team, comprising of all Student Leaders, has a responsibility to fulfil this role as well as their specific area of responsibility. Student leadership positions are available in both the Primary and Secondary schools including Primary, Middle and Senior Student Leaders all requiring a high degree of individual responsibility in upholding the ideals and values of the College.

Our student leaders are invited to apply to the Principal and are expected to fulfil a range of duties and responsibilities to help our College function. Selection as a Student Leader is not necessarily a reward for past achievements or behaviour, but rather a matching of a person with a responsibility to be fulfilled, and is based on merit and information gleaned through an application process.

Student leadership is cultivated through personal development and opportunities to practice and use leadership capabilities in the learning environment. Competencies developed include project planning, organisational skills, public speaking, event management, communication, team building, problem solving and more.

The qualities we wish our student leaders to uphold:

  • Commitment to the College’s curricular and co-curricular programs
  • Pride in oneself and the College
  • Enthusiasm and the ability to motivate others
  • Ability to organise and manage people
  • High levels of interpersonal skills
  • Good communications skills
  • Respect for others
  • Initiative
  • Reliability
  • Trustworthiness
