Sports

The St John’s sporting program is a key component of our College’s holistic, balanced approach to education. Through regular high-quality sporting competition against like-minded independent schools, students will develop the human attributes necessary for their future including teamwork, reliability, responsibility, self-discipline and leadership. These skills provide the foundation for success in all educational endeavours.

St John’s is a member of The Associated Schools (TAS) and Junior TAS Sporting Association with participation year-round Saturday sporting competition of TAS and JTAS schools (Years 4-12). TAS has evolved through the years into the premier co-educational inter-school sporting competition in Queensland. The Mission of the Association is to provide high quality, co-educational, interschool, sporting competition underpinned by the Association’s core values of participation, pride, performance, sportsmanship and community.


School Representative

St John’s Anglican College offers a variety of sports where students aged 10–18 can represent the College at district, regional and state levels. The following sports are available: AFL, athletics, basketball, cricket, cross country, football, hockey, netball, rugby union, swimming, tennis, touch football and volleyball and water polo.

St John’s is part of the Southern Scorpions District which forms one of the five districts that make up the Metropolitan West catchment.

Sporting Academy Programs

St John’s offers a variety of sporting academy programs throughout the school year designed to benefit aspiring sporting students to learn and develop fundamental skills, strategy, and team cohesion.

Meet our Sporting Academy Coaches

 

Hockey Academy

Mr Anthony Hillier, Sports and Specialised Activities Manager at St John’s is a level two nationally accredited hockey coach. His high-performance sports experience also includes U19 coach for the Australian Cycling Team (Youth Olympics) in 2007, Qld Head Coach (Track Cycling) 15-17 yrs. – 2007, the Australian Sports Commission – Talent Search Coach in 2007-2008. and as High-Performance Track Scholarship Coach for Cycling QLD/ QAS from 2016-2017.

Football Academy

Ms Amy Armistead is an accredited FFA Coach who currently holds an AFC/FFA “B” Licence. She has been involved in football for over 20 years in different capacities including playing, a district official, regional official and Queensland school sport official as well as a club coach. Amy completed her tertiary education on a sporting scholarship in the United States where she played in the NCAA DII competition with the University of West Alabama. Her extensive coaching experience extends to the National Premier League where she is the current the U23 Girls Head Coach at Lions FC and works with the talent identification committee building the female program.

Volleyball Academy

Mr Joshua Porter is a HPE teacher at St John’s and has played in many representative volleyball teams including the North Queensland Army team. He was successful in being selected into the Australian Army team for volleyball and most recently, Joshua has played Division 1 in PVL for the Brisbane Bears.

Basketball Academy

Mr Chris Bate has a passion for basketball and is an experienced player and coach. He was scouted to play basketball at St John’s College Hamilton, New Zealand under coach Mel Young (former vice president of Basketball New Zealand) and played representative for Waikato under 14, 16, & 18. Chris was also part of the Koru development program.

Tennis Academy

Old Collegian, Miss Ainsley Sherrington has played representative tennis at regional, state, and national levels for over 10 years and in 2020 become a Qualified Tennis Professional. Ainsley aims to not only improve students tennis skills but to create a difference in a player’s perspective on dedication, resilience, and persistence.

Rugby Development Academy

Ms Emily Bass is a Semi Professional Rugby League Player for the Brisbane Broncos NRLW Side. Before making her debut for the Brisbane Broncos in February 2022, Emily played both Rugby 7’s and Rugby Union for the Queensland Reds. Emily has 8 years of experience in Rugby Union, with playing, coaching, or managing teams. Her goal in 2023 is to develop both the Year 7 and 8 cohorts in Rugby Union, as this is key to secure long-term success in the TAS Competition.

Cricket Academy

Mr Jeff Holmes is in his sixth season as Head Cricket Coach at St John’s and coached at West’s Juniors for six years. Having played the game for many years, Jeff completed a Graduate Certificate in Sports Coaching and has a Level 2 Coaching Certificate.

Old Collegian Mr Ben Dunkley joined the coaching team at the end of Year 12 where he had the privilege of being Captain of the Firsts and St John’s Cricket Captain.  Ben has played on a variety of representative teams including Met West and Queensland teams.

Netball Academy

Mrs Linda Reid has been involved with netball for over 25 years either playing or coaching at school, club, association, and state level. Linda has gained a passion and desire to help young athletes to develop the skills to thrive, succeed, and enjoy their netball now and into the future.
