Music

St John’s Instrumental Music Program is compulsory from Year 3 through to Year 7 with students studying a band or orchestral instrument.

The program encourages students to reach their highest potential from beginners to those studying for their music exams. Employing several of the finest professional musicians and teachers in Queensland, St John’s ensure that the best tuition is available at the College.

Students can participate in one or more of the 20 string, band or choral ensembles.

Bands

Primary School

Wind Ensemble – Students studying a wind instrument are encouraged to join this ensemble.

Secondary School

Wind Ensemble – Students studying a wind instrument are encouraged to join this ensemble.

Wind Symphony – Students studying a wind instrument by audition or invitation with approximately AMEB Grade 4 or higher can join the symphony.

Jazz Ensemble – This ensemble is offered predominately to Middle School students with approximately AMEB Grades.

Jazz Orchestra – The orchestra is predominately for Senior School students by audition or invitation.

Corelli Strings – Years 3-4 students

Bellissimo Strings – Years 4-6 students

Dolce Strings – Students of an intermediate level

Secondary School

Academy Strings – Years 9-12 students

Dolce Strings – Students of an intermediate level

Guitar Ensemble – Years 7-12 students

String Quartet – Students in Years 9-12 by invitation

Vocal

Primary School

Capriccio Choir – Years 1-3 students

Alpine Singers – Years 4-6 students

Red Fire Choir – Students in Years 3-6 by audition or invitation

Secondary

Chorale – Students in Years 7-12

Bella Vocé – Female vocalists in Years 10-12

Mezza Vocé – Female vocalists in Years 7-9 by audition or invitation

Fella Vocé – Male vocalists in Years 7-12

Private Music Tuition

Specialist private music teachers provide tuition to students from Years 7-12 at an additional cost. Tuition is available for the following instruments:

  • Violin, Viola, Cello, Double Bass, Guitar
  • Trumpet, Trombone, Euphonium, French Horn,
  • Flute, Oboe, Clarinet, Bassoon, Saxophone
  • Piano, Percussion, Voice
