Junior School

At St John’s, our curriculum is specifically designed to prepare your child for a rapidly changing future, where they will need resilience and thinking skills including problem-solving, creativity, critical thinking, and reflection.

Encompassing all the key learning areas of the Australian Curriculum and presented through the International Baccalaureate (IB) Primary Years Program (PYP) in engaging and thought-provoking ways, our Prep to Year 6 curriculum inspires students to ask deep questions, use their curiosity and inquire.

Dedicated and passionate teachers who are highly experienced experts in Junior School education, work together to ensure the right balance of explicit instruction and student inquiry in their lessons. They closely monitor the development of each student, collect data on their understanding and make adjustments to cater for their learning needs.

Age-appropriate and engaging learning experiences that extend your child, helping them to reach their potential, are a feature of our programs and Learning Enhancement, including support for students from non-English speaking families, offers differentiated learning experiences for identified students. Weekly specialist lessons enhance our curriculum and provide students with enriched experiences in:

  • Music
  • Speech and Drama
  • Library and Innovation
  • Chinese
  • Physical Education

In Years 1 and 2 your child will participate in Chess lessons linked to the Mathematics curriculum and from Years 3 to 6 they will receive a musical instrument and small group instrumental lessons. Our Performing Arts Centre of Excellence provides all our students with rich experiences in the Arts.

The STEM Institute is filled with opportunities for students to learn through the interconnections of Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics. Students love experimenting to learn about their world, delving into coding and robotics and seeking to identify solutions to global problems. St John’s annual Innovation Challenge and PYP Exhibition are two avenues through which our students can showcase their understanding and innovative ideas.

These rich learning experiences across cultural, community, spiritual, co-curricular, sporting and academic pursuits help to cultivate a spirit of enquiry and build character and integrity in our students. When our Year 6 students are ready to leave Junior School we ensure their smooth transition to St John’s Middle School, knowing they depart as responsible, resilient and independent learners ready for Secondary school.
