Spotlight on Old Collegian Courtney Slater

Mon, 03/04/2023Posted by:

Upon graduating from St John’s, students leave with the courage and enthusiasm to pursue their future careers and passions. One such student is Courtney Slater from the Class of 2021, who will attend the Camp 2030 Summit in New York City in September this year. Courtney was selected from over 3,000 applications bringing together top youth changemakers from around the world for 6 days of innovation and co-creation aligning with the United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) priorities.

The aim of Camp 2030 is to develop core knowledge to solve global problems beyond this experience; empowering young changemakers, and equipping them with the confidence to take on critical global challenges whilst learning in a fun, creative way within a like-minded community. During the conference, Courtney will work on developing an innovative business solution for their assigned social challenge in a team of other participants at an upstate New York campground ‘Camp Echo Lake’. On the last day of the conference, they will pitch their ideas during the UN General Assembly and Global Goals Week in New York City. An impact report of all the Campers solutions will be published.

Courtney hopes by participating in this wonderful opportunity to enhance her leadership skills, establish lasting connections, and contribute to resolving global issues.

Currently in her second year of university, Courtney is studying a Dual Degree in Bachelor of Physiological Science and Bachelor of Criminology at Griffith University. After completing her degrees, she would like to pursue a career in the Mental Health or Justice/Criminal sector, with the aspiration of becoming a Forensic Psychologist in the Federal Police.

In addition to her studies, Courtney works two days a week at a psychology practice in Toowong, and two days a week as a shift manager at McDonald’s.

We wish Courtney all the best and look forward to hearing about her success at Camp 2030.
