Humans of St John’s

Welcome to the latest edition of Humans of St John’s featuring our recently appointed College Registrar, Mrs Cindy Morris.

Whilst on holiday in Queensland in 2004 with my husband and two children, we fell in love with the lifestyle, the weather, and the can-do attitude of Queenslanders, I thought to myself “how can I live here”? And within the year, we had packed up our belongings and moved to the Sunshine State relocating to Brisbane’s western suburbs.

Growing up in the 70’s and 80’s in Bendigo, Central Victoria and attending a local high school I didn’t really have the opportunities that our young people have today.  In saying that, I had a wonderful childhood growing up as the youngest of four children enjoying school and making wonderful memories.

I was always interested in tourism and travel and thought this could be the pathway that I would enjoy. I went to TAFE, completed a Diploma of Tourism followed by working in the Bendigo Tourism Office for a number of years. I loved this job, meeting people and promoting what Bendigo had to offer being one of the first goldmining towns in Australia.

When I moved to Brisbane, I secured a role at The University of QLD, and it was here that I learnt all about further study. It took me 7 years, but I graduated with a Bachelor of Arts majoring in Ancient History and I can officially call myself a “Historian”. I remained working in the higher education sector for 15 years with significant experience supporting senior high school students move into tertiary studies and future career paths.

Joining the St John’s family in September 2022, I have the opportunity to utilise my experience and help students and their families at the beginning of their educational journey: from Kindergarten to Year 12. I am already getting a lot of personal satisfaction knowing that I am helping future students with their education. St John’s is a generous, warm, and caring community and I feel privileged to be part of it.

I am also very blessed to have an amazing family with grandchildren which I am affectionately known to them as Ninny!
